Christmas is only a few short days away, which means this is our last blog of 2021.
It’s been an up-and-down year for everyone in the hospitality sector, and that’s putting it mildly. But, as the client Christmas card that just landed in our office reminds us, “Tis the season to be jolly!’, so we thought we’d take that advice and end 2021 on an optimistic note.
How are we going to do that?

You may already have heard about psychometric testing.
Psychometric testing is often used in the recruitment process to measure a candidate’s abilities and intelligence levels, and sometimes to explore other factors like personality, emotional intelligence, and behaviour. Based on the results, the prospective employer can get insight into how well the candidate might work within their team and what the candidate’s drivers are, so the employer will know how to motivate them always to give their best performance.
Many of our clients use it, especially when they drill down the final selection of candidates for a position. Many successful organisations rely on psychometric testing too. When you know how to psychometrically test someone properly, the knowledge you and your candidate will both gain from the experience can be tremendous.
But psychometric testing doesn’t have to purely be a recruitment tool. You can use it in your workplace right now.
What are the best tools to use for personal development?
(‘Personal development tool’ is a much friendly phrase than ‘psychometric testing’, but they’re essentially both the same thing.)
The Kolbe System
The Kolbe system is based on the premise that four striving instincts drive all human behaviour. When you’re able to identify the unique combination of those instincts in your team members, they’ll be able to achieve their personal and interpersonal goals more effectively.
Kolbe calls these instincts’ Action Modes’:
- Fact Finder – the instinctive way we gather and share information (i.e. do you enjoy getting into the details, or do details overwhelm you?)
- Follow Thru – the instinctive way we arrange and design (i.e. are you more comfortable within a structure, or are you a free spirit?)
- Quick Start – the instinctive way we deal with risk and uncertainty (i.e. would you rather take your time to get the details right, or do you want to take action now and worry about the details later?)
- Implementor – the instinctive way we handle space and tangibles (i.e. are you an ideas person who’s always thinking about the bigger picture or the hands-on type who wants to roll up your sleeves and make it happen?)
According to Kolbe, most of us possess a mixture of these traits. We’re all dominant in at least one or two of them and can even resist some of the others, which means we have no ability in them whatsoever.
It’s a tool that has been used by hundreds of companies, including American Express, AT&T and Motorola, so it’s obviously stood the test of time.

The Myers-Briggs test takes the form of a questionnaire that indicates the four dimensions of your personality so you can better understand yourself and others:
- Where you focus your attention (i.e. Extroversion or Introversion)
- How you take in information (i.e. Sensing or Intuition)
- How you make decisions (i.e. Thinking or Feeling)
- How you interact with the world (i.e. Judging or Perceiving)
Based on the answers given, the subject is identified as having one of 16 personality types. The personality types each have their own four-letter code, for example ISTP (The Crafter), ISFP (The Artist), INTJ (The Architect) and ESFP (The Performer).
The goal of the MBTI isn’t to look at you or your team member’s score in comparison to the results of other people; it’s to offer further information about your/their unique personality so that you can direct your team members more successfully towards the jobs they do best. That information is especially useful in a team situation because it will help you determine where your employees’ skills are most valuable and give them (and you) an understanding of the skills and values of the rest of your team members.

CliftonStrengths is an assessment test that reveals what you and your team members naturally do best so you can all focus on their greatest talents. Based on the answers they give to 177 paired statements, the CliftonStrengths assessment will measure their natural patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving so that they (and you) can harness their skills and the skills of their colleagues and direct them more effectively towards succeeding at their goals.
